Coldest Night of the Year

On Saturday, HomeSpace participated in the Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) fundraising event at Eau Claire Market in support of Canadians experiencing homelessness.

CNOY takes place nationally with different groups hosting events locally; the downtown Calgary event was hosted by KAIROS and Feed the Hungry, with half the proceeds going towards HomeSpace’s Bankview property. Bankview is a 26-unit affordable rental apartment building that provides community development housing for individuals and families, in partnership with CUPS Calgary and KAIROS affordable housing program.

With 293 walkers, 37 teams and 90 volunteers, the event raised over $80,000 and Team HomeSpace blew our $1500 goal out of the water, raising more than $3500! Among the speakers, Mayor Nenshi rallied the walkers before we set out on the Bow River path in the -20 windchill. Our new hot pink HomeSpace toques helped keep the team warm and high-spirited for the frigid 2 Km jaunt.

Our residents, including those at Bankview, were either homeless or at risk of homelessness before they moved into their HomeSpace apartment. Now, thanks to generous people like those involved in CNOY, they have an affordable, permanent place to call home. We’re so grateful for the support of KAIROS and everyone who participated and donated to the cause. Looking forward to next year!
